Rhythm & Gestures is a community offering for dancers of all levels. Artists from different disciplines, styles, or cultures come together to hold a collaborative class focusing on technique, music, and narrative building, in hopes of adding to your creative process and finding new ways to move!
Rhythm & Gestures classes are generously subsidized by our facilitators or organizational grant support.
Rhythm & Gestures: An All Levels Bharatanatyam Class (Berkeley)
1 hour 30 minutes @ $21
Every Monday starting August 18th from 7:30 - 9:00 pm

We begin with a warm up, fundamental adavus or foundational steps, learn a routine to popular music, and also do some abhinaya work rooted in gesture and improvisational storytelling. While some Indian dance experience would help, you do NOT need to be familiar with Indian forms to attend!

✨ FIND MY NARRATIVE: An Abhinaya Workshop with Sreelakshmy Govardhanan ✨
Nava Dance Theatre is thrilled to welcome Sreelakshmy Govardhanan to the Bay Area for Find My Narrative — an immersive workshop exploring the philosophical, aesthetic, and performative dimensions of the javali, an abhinaya piece.
Through somatic exploration, storytelling, emotion, and expression, Sreelakshmy Chechi will guide participants in finding their own narratives beyond the constraints of fixed choreography.

ABOUT SREELAKSHMY GOVARDHANAN
Sreelakshmy Govardhanan is an accomplished Kuchipudi dancer, choreographer, and teacher based in Kerala, India. She trained under Kuchipudi Yakshagana maestro Pasumarthy Rattaiha Sarma, whose mentorship has shaped her journey in mastering the nuances of the form.
Her practice includes ongoing research and documentation of Kuchipudi Yakshagana. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of Avantika Space for Dance, a center dedicated to learning, performance, and research. Her work spans workshops, classes, seminars, and lecture-demonstrations.
